Course Details
This comprehensive 3-day course is for anyone interested in assisting women and families in having a satisfying birth experience. It is designed to guide participants in becoming expert labor support providers as doulas. It uses texts, supplementary literature, videos, and role-play to build theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Attendance constitutes one step in the process to become a DONA International Certified Birth Doula (CBD/DONA). A 200+ page notebook is included.
Day 1 - Breastfeeding Workshop 9 am - 1 pm
This basic 4-hour course is required for birth doula certification. It will prepare doulas for providing information on breastfeeding and supporting the mother immediately after birth, and for the first few weeks postpartum.
Day 1 - Birth Doula Training - 2 pm - 7 pm
1. Introduction to DONA International - Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, the certification process.
2. Introduction to Labor Support - What doulas do, what support is, evidence on doulas.
3. Prenatal Contact - Meeting your clients, the doula and the partner, doula's scope and advice, birth plans.

Day 2 - 9 am - 6 pm
4. Emotional Support in Labor - Hormones of labor, guide for birth partners and doulas, 3 R's in childbirth preparation
5. Comfort Measures - Positions for labor and birth, comfort techniques, rebozo's and birth balls, role-play
6. Special Circumstances - Priorities for childbirth, the epidural, difficult labors, cesareans.

Day 3 - 9 am - 4 pm
7. Communication - Birth advocacy, ideal birth, active listening, counseling skills, cultural awareness.
8. Postpartum - The newborn, processing the birth experience, factors that influence recovery.
9. Your Doula Business - business side, agreements, client intake information, social media and marketing.
