What is a Doula?

The word "Doula" is an ancient Greek term translated today as a professional woman who provides physical, emotional, and informational support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Doulas are recognized for their contribution to improved physical outcomes and emotional well-being of mothers and babies. They work in cooperation with fathers, family members, midwives, physicians and nurses.

What Does a Doula Do?

A doula personalizes childbirth education information; provides guidance during the labour and birth process; suggests comfort measures appropriately; supports the husband/partner and family members; is the consistent familiar "outsider" in the room; bridges the gap between the medical team and the emotional aspect of the birthing process; honors the mother's desires; and maintains a comforting and respectful environment.

What is a Postpartum Doula?

Postpartum doulas offer guidance, emotional support and practical assistance to new mother's and their families.
